1880-1899
Light bulb/phonograph
In the early 1880s, Thomas Edison invented the light bulb and the phonograph. The light bulb was the first invention to bring electricity to a practical use. This invention sparked a market of its own. This is shown by how much today uses a light bulb or a projection system. The phonograph was also invented by Thomas Edison. The phonograph was the first way for everyday people to be able to buy their own music and play it whenever and wherever they wanted.

Steel plated steam powered battleships
In 1889 the US had started to produce steel plated, steam powered battleships. One of these ships was the Maine. Alfred T. Mahan, a naval officer and historian, had urged the US leaders to build a strong navy. Eventually the US took his suggestion and made it into reality. These warships proved to be extremely important as a world war was around the corner. By 1900 the US had the 3rd largest navy in the world.

Panama Canal
The Panama Canal was a monumental engineering feat. This canal shortened the trip from California to Florida from 67 days down to 22 days. More than 35000 workers helped to dig this 50 mile long stretch. When it opened in 1914, it cut 8000 nautical miles off the trip. This amazing feat is still in use today.

Wright Brothers Airplane
Orville and Wilbur Wright invented the very first working airplane. In December 19013 they had their first sustained and controlled flight. This invention’s impact was huge. Airplanes were used in both world wars and are still in use today for both military use and for commercial use. The Wright brothers work has affected every single generation after them.

1910-1919
Machine guns and artillery
During the start of World War I, many defensive and offensive weapons were invented. First, the machine gun was invented. When this weapon did not overheat or jam, it was able to easily destroy the emery by pelting hundreds of bullets at the soldiers. In addition, Artillery and poison gas was invented. Artillery helped to compliment machine guns and strengthen defensive power even more. The impact of both of these inventions is that no one was able to win WWI because of the extremely strong defenders

Submarines
German U-boats or submarines were also invented early into WWI. This invention is important to the US because an attack on an innocent ship caused the US to come in and enter world war two on the allies. Without the invention of the submarine, it is unlikely that the US would have become involved in the war if it were not for U-boats.

Ford model T
Henry Ford helped to spark our economy with the invention of the Model T. Ford was unlike any other producer. He mass produced the car on an assembly line, allowing the price to be extremely low. This process of scientific management is a huge part of big businesses today. Ford changed the US from in 1919, 10 percent of Americans owned a car, to 1927, where 56 percent did.

Radio
Millions of radios were sold during the 1920s. Before the 1920s the radio did not have many channels. By 1923, there were almost 600 broadcasts over the radio. The impact of the radio was huge. This allowed presidents for the first time to be able to talk to almost all of America.

1930-1939
Hoover Dam
The Hoover dam was an enormous engineering challenge. This dam on the Colorado River helped to provide jobs for the US as part of a massive public works program. This Dam went on to power the west. The Dam did and still does power more than a million people every year.

Movies
By 1939, two thirds of all Americans attended at least one movie a week. Movies provided escape from the Great depression for a cheap price. For a very reasonable price, kids and adults would be able to watch a number of plays and movies at the theater. Films also helped to reflect the feeling towards many political items in addition.

1940-1949
War planes
War planes helped to get the United States out of isolationism and into yet another world war. Planes also played a decisive role in the war after we were in it. Daily, the US would send out bombing raids, raining thousands of pounds of explosives on towns. For example, the Tuskegee Airmen flew B-24s on more than 1,500 missions.

The Atomic Bomb
The atomic bomb ended one war, but practically started a new one. The atomic bomb killed hundreds of thousands of people. The impact of the two droppings was so large that the topic is still debated today. The atomic bomb was also used as the main threat in the cold war, accompanied by it’s even bigger relatives.

1950-1959
Pills or Oral Contraceptives
Pills produced the first help on a large scale against sickness. A number of pills were invented and put into circulation. The impact of this invention is that Americans now had access to a way to get and feel better. This technology was so great that it is still a help today in sickness.

Hard Disk
In 1956, the first hard disk was invented. This represented the start of the computer evolving into what it is today. This invention helped to kick start every other component of a computer into getting better. Without this invention, computers would not be even near to where we are today.

1960-1969
Moon landing
In 1969, JFK fulfilled his promise to the country. Throughout the cold war, the US and the USSR were in a race to see who could get a man on the moon first. The impact of the US winning this race was huge. This represented how much of a power the US was and it also showed the world that we are a very strong country.

The first Internet
ARPANET, or the first form of internet, was invented in 1969. This breakthrough was very limited, but so much was learned from it that we made something bigger and better. Without this original “packet sharing,” our computers today would likely not have what they have today,

1970-1979
Floppy disk
The invention of the floppy disk made the computer into something reasonable. Before the floppy disk, computers did not have enough storage to be able to function reasonably. With the floppy disk, a consumer could have dozens of programs, not just 1 or 2. This invention allowed computers to expand their barriers bigger and bigger.

Cell phone
In 1979, the cellular telephone was invented. This new way of communication would eventually branch off to produce a market of its own. During this time, phones were only able to call and answer in low quality calls. This invention started to make other companies produce telephone lines, allowing for even more expansion.

1980-1989
CD
The compact disc was the next step after floppy disks. The compact disc could store more than 60 times what a floppy disk could. This allowed for new things such as music to be held in a very small disc, contrary to vinyl disks. The impact of the CD is that is, like the floppy disk, allowed computer manufactures to reach new heights.

Space shuttle
The modern space shuttle was invented in 1981. This new shuttle was reusable and could easily be controlled. There was only one engine and fuel tank that needed to be replaced to fly now. This is a huge downsize from the previous shuttles. This affected the US by allowing us to conduct more research and to be able to gain more knowledge about space.

Internet
The modern internet, or the World Wide Web, was invented in 1990. Unlike ARPANET, this internet was not regulated and it was open to everyone. This allowed for new information to be shared on a new and extreme level. This type of internet is still used today.

DVD
The DVD was the next level of the CD. In its early stages it held more than 10 times as much as a CD. The DVD allowed for movies. Instead of going to the theater to see a movie, now all that is needed to do is pop a disc into a reader. This invention once again had a huge impact, expanding the bounds of a computer to almost anything imaginable.
